A man in Njiru Sub-County shocked the court when he pleaded with the court to send him to jail instead of sending him for a psychiatric test saying he was only suffering from food poisoning.

This was after Makadara resident magistrate Mercy Malingu ordered a mental assessment of the man who admitted punching his mother on the head leaving her with harmful injuries.

The court heard that the accused person committed the offense on July 28 at his mother’s house in Mwengenye estate in Nairobi County. On the stated day, the accused is said to have gone to his mother’s house and found her asleep. He started banging on the window glass and eventually broke them into pieces.

When his mother confronted him he punched her repeatedly on the head. She reported the matter at Obama police station before seeking treatment at a nearby medical facility. When he was arrested, he admitted to hitting his mother and demanded that he be jailed even after being warned that the offense attracted a jail term of three years.

He however pointed out that he had been feeding on bad food lately which has caused him food poisoning and hence prayed to be treated. The magistrate ordered he be taken through a psychiatrist assessment before he appears in court again. He was granted a cash bail of Sh5,000.
